Mission Overview [Intro]

A quick introduction to this website and project.

What is this?

Primarily, this is a placeholder blog item so that my website does not fall apart before I even get started. You've been used, thank you for your attention.

FYI there is no spell check in vim, so expect my grammar and spelling to reflect that of an engineer.

Then what is this website?

The newspace resolution and its child movements have been a massive boon for the human race. Advances in satellite components - led primarily by small companies - have rapidly increased the capabilities of satellites small and large. What used to be a vast empty space full of metal boxes and tiny microcontrollers has quickly become a teeming sea of constellations sporting slightly fancier metal boxes and considerably faster compute.

As we follow the trend forward, edge processing, and dare i say it... data centers... will dominate space. Of this, I am certain. Unfortunately I - and everyone I have talked to - don't know what the hell we are going to actually... DO... with all this processing power. Aside from the obvious DoD use cases which will not be discussed here.

So how do we commercialize edge processing?

I dont know.

Thats not the answer you were looking for was it? Sorry. But I have a few untested ideas. This website - blog - thing - whatever it is - will record my attempts to find a use case. This is the story of life I guess, finding purpose. My plan is as follows:

Step 1: Infrastructure

I am not a software engineer. This may surprise you as you read this on my incredibly sleek, completely custom and precariously remote hosted monstrosity of a website. I promise you, the only reason I coded this thing raw was because of my sheer hatred and displeasure of the concept of paying Wix a monthly hosting fee. Eat crap Wix, I did it.

Since we have established that I know little beyond basic web development, I will have to start with the basics. Learning what on Earth (or off!) is going on in the Artificial Intelligence field.

The current plan is to train and test a few basic models to detect the easy stuff - boats, clouds, etc. - while gaining the knowledge to perform more intense research. During this time, I will also need to build some infrastructure in order to produce meaningful data. The first of which I plan is geolocation of satellite images. Unfortunately not all satellite images come with embedded (or accurate) location data. If I want to produce meaningful, actionable outputs then I will need to know where I am looking.

Step 2: Problem Solving

This one seems obvious, after getting the infrastructure in place I am going to try to solve a few industry problems using EO based AI. This might be monitoring environmental factors to spread awareness about global warming or other issues. It could be characterizing damaged areas after natural disasters. If I'm feeling really ambitious we might get something like live wildfire detection. I'll let you know when I get there.

Step 3: Iteration and Depth

This is as far as my feeble mind can see into the future. I will interate through many use-cases and try to gain traction. If any of them spark interest, we dive deeper. Then it simply becomes a matter of continnuing to expand upon whichever work seems most impactful.

It's all execution, always has been.

Step 4: Skynet

Don't say I didnt warn you. We built these systems fully knowing the consequences.
